Ingredients

  • pounds fresh green beans
  • 8 slices bacon
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon red chili flakes optional

Instructions

Prepare the Green Beans

  • Wash the green beans well. Trim the ends. Set them aside on a clean towel to dry.

Cook the Bacon

  • Place bacon in a skillet. Cook on medium heat. Flip until crispy. Remove bacon and chop it.

Melt the Butter

  • In the same skillet, keep some bacon fat. Add butter. Let it melt slowly on low heat.

Add Garlic

  • Add minced garlic to the butter. Stir gently. Cook for one minute until fragrant, not brown.

Add Brown Sugar

  • Sprinkle brown sugar into the pan. Stir until it melts and blends with butter smoothly.

Pour Soy Sauce

  • Add soy sauce slowly. Stir well. The sauce will darken and smell rich.

Add Green Beans

  • Place green beans into the skillet. Toss gently until all beans are coated well.

Add Seasonings

  • Sprinkle black pepper and chili flakes. Stir again to spread seasoning evenly.

Add Bacon

  • Add chopped bacon back into the pan. Mix it with the beans and sauce carefully.

Simmer Slowly

  • Lower the heat. Cover the pan. Let beans cook for 25 minutes, stirring sometimes.

Thicken the Sauce

  • Remove the lid. Cook for 10 more minutes. Sauce will thicken and stick to beans.

Taste and Adjust

  • Taste one bean. Add more pepper or soy sauce if needed. Turn off heat.

Serve Hot

  • Transfer to a serving dish. Serve hot for best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • Use fresh green beans for best texture and color.
  • Canned green beans work but cook faster. Reduce cooking time slightly.
  • Turkey bacon can replace pork bacon for a lighter version.
  • Add chopped onions for more depth of flavor.
  • A splash of apple cider vinegar balances sweetness well.
  • Use coconut sugar instead of brown sugar for a deeper taste.
  • Add mushrooms for a hearty side dish twist.
