Ingredients

  • 1 large white onion
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • Oil for deep frying
  • Optional dipping sauce

Instructions

Prepare the Onion

  • Cut off a small piece from the top of the onion. Keep the root attached so the petals stay together during frying.

Remove the Outer Skin

  • Peel off the onion skin carefully. Hold the onion tight so the layers stay firm and do not break apart.

Slice the Onion into Petals

  • Place the onion root-side down. Make several cuts from top to bottom. Do not cut the root so the onion stays whole.

Open the Onion Flower

  • Turn the onion over. Use your fingers to gently spread the petals apart. Separate them slowly to avoid breaking.

Soak in Ice Water

  • Place the onion in ice water for 10 minutes. This helps the petals open wider and become crispier when fried.

Mix the Dry Coating

  • In a bowl, mix flour, cornstarch, salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and chili powder until well combined.

Prepare the Wet Batter

  • In another bowl, whisk eggs and milk together. Whisk until smooth without any lumps.

Coat the Onion in Dry Mix

  • Take the onion out of the water. Pat it dry. Cover the onion completely in the flour mixture.

Dip in the Wet Batter

  • Place the onion into the egg mixture. Make sure the batter reaches every petal inside and outside.

Coat Again in the Dry Mix

  • Place the onion back into the flour mixture. Press gently so the coating sticks well to the petals.

Heat the Oil

  • Heat oil in a deep fryer or deep pot. Oil must be very hot, around 180°C, for a crispy finish.

Fry the Onion Flower

  • Place the coated onion into the hot oil. Fry until golden brown and crispy. Turn it gently if needed.

Remove from Oil

  • Take out the fried onion using tongs. Be careful because the oil will be very hot.

Drain Extra Oil

  • Place the fried onion on a plate with paper towels. This removes extra oil and keeps it crispy.

Serve Warm

  • Serve the onion flower hot with your favorite dipping sauce. Enjoy the crispy petals and bold flavor.

Notes

  • Use a large, firm onion for the best flower shape. Soft onions may fall apart.
  • Always keep the root attached to hold the petals together.
  • Double coating gives extra crunch, so do not skip the second layer of flour.
  • Use very cold water to open the petals more.
  • Add cayenne pepper for extra heat if you like spicier food.
  • Add herbs like parsley or oregano for a different flavor.
  • Use gluten-free flour for a gluten-free version.
  • Try air-frying for a lighter, less oily version.
  • Serve with spicy mayo, ranch, or garlic sauce for extra taste.
