Ingredients

  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1 large grated carrot
  • 1 medium grated apple
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 2 –3 tablespoons water if needed

Instructions

Preheat the oven

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F. Line your baking tray with parchment paper.

Grate the apple

  • Wash and grate the apple. Remove the seeds because horses should not eat them.

Grate the carrot

  • Peel and grate the carrot. This helps the ingredients mix well.

Mix oats and flour

  • Put rolled oats and whole wheat flour in a bowl. Mix them well.

Add apple and carrot

  • Add the grated apple and grated carrot into the bowl. Mix gently.

Add honey

  • Pour in the honey. It adds sweetness and helps the dough come together.

Add water slowly

  • Add water one spoon at a time. Mix until the dough becomes soft and easy to shape.

Shape small balls

  • Use your hands to make small dough balls. Make sure they are firm.

Place on tray

  • Put the dough balls on the baking tray. Leave some space between each one.

Bake the treats

  • Bake for 18–20 minutes. Remove them when they look slightly golden and firm.

Cool completely

  • Let the treats cool fully before giving them to your horse.

Notes

  • Use applesauce instead of grated apple if you want smoother dough.
  • Add a little cinnamon for a nice smell.
  • Never add sugar, salt, or chocolate. These are unsafe for horses.
  • Use small cookie cutters for cute shapes.
  • Add shredded beet pulp for extra fiber.
