Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter or shortening
  • 3/4 cup cold milk
  • Optional: melted butter for brushing

Instructions

Preheat the Oven

  • Set the oven to 450°F (230°C). Put parchment paper on a baking sheet.

Mix Dry Ingredients

  • In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Stir well.

Cut in Butter

  • Add cold butter. Use a pastry cutter or two knives. Mix until it looks like crumbs.

Add Milk

  • Pour cold milk into the bowl. Stir gently until dough forms. Do not overmix.

Knead the Dough Lightly

  • Put dough on a floured surface. Fold it a few times gently to make layers.

Roll the Dough

  • Roll dough to 1-inch thick. Roll lightly to keep biscuits soft.

Cut the Biscuits

  • Use a round cutter to cut biscuits. Press straight down. Do not twist the cutter.

Place on Baking Sheet

  • Put biscuits close together on parchment paper. Close biscuits stay soft on sides.

Bake Biscuits

  • Bake for 10–12 minutes until golden brown on top.

Brush with Butter

  • Take out from oven. Brush melted butter on top for flavor.

Cool and Serve

  • Put biscuits on a cooling rack. Serve warm with jam or honey.

Notes

  • Use cold butter for soft, flaky biscuits.
  • Fold dough 2–3 times to make layers.
  • Add a little garlic powder for a savory taste.
  • Use buttermilk instead of milk for tangy flavor.
  • Freeze unbaked biscuits up to 1 month and bake when needed.
