Ingredients

  • 1 cup no-salt-added tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce low sodium
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon chili powder
  • ¼ teaspoon mustard powder
  • ¼ cup water

Instructions

Combine Tomato Base

  • Mix tomato sauce and tomato paste in a saucepan. Stir gently until both ingredients blend into a smooth base.

Add Sweet Ingredients

  • Add honey and brown sugar. Stir well until the sweetness mixes evenly into the tomato mixture.

Pour Vinegar and Worcestershire

  • Add apple cider vinegar and low-sodium Worcestershire sauce. These ingredients add a tangy and smoky flavor.

Add Dry Spices Slowly

  • Sprinkle smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, mustard powder, and black pepper.

Mix with Water

  • Pour in the water and stir. This helps the sauce become smooth and easy to simmer on low heat.

Heat on Medium Flame

  • Turn on the heat and cook the sauce. Stir gently to avoid burning the bottom of the pan.

Simmer to Thicken

  • Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes. This step makes the sauce thicker and richer.

Taste and Adjust

  • Taste the sauce. Add more honey for sweetness or vinegar for tanginess based on your preference.

Cool the Sauce

  • Turn off the heat and let the sauce cool. Cooling helps the flavors settle and become stronger.

Store in a Clean Jar

  • Pour the cooled sauce into an airtight jar. Keep refrigerated and use as needed.

Notes

  • Use fresh garlic instead of garlic powder for a stronger flavor.
  • Add a pinch of cayenne pepper for extra spice.
  • Use maple syrup instead of honey for a different sweetness.
  • Add liquid smoke for a deeper smoky flavor.
  • Use low-sodium ketchup instead of tomato sauce for a sweeter taste.
  • Replace brown sugar with coconut sugar for a healthier option.
  • Add pineapple juice for a tropical, fruity twist.
  • Blend the sauce for a smooth restaurant-style finish.
  • Double the recipe and freeze portions for later use.
