Ingredients

  • 3 cans baked beans about 15 oz each
  • 1 cup onion chopped
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup BBQ sauce
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 6 slices bacon
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

Cook the Bacon

  • Place bacon in a frying pan. Cook on medium heat until crispy. Remove and place on paper towel to drain excess oil.

Chop the Bacon

  • Once bacon cools slightly, chop into small pieces. This helps spread smoky flavor evenly throughout the baked beans mixture.

Cook the Onion

  • In the same pan, cook chopped onion in bacon fat. Stir often until soft, golden and fragrant. This adds extra flavor depth.

Preheat the Oven

  • Preheat your oven to 175°C or 350°F. This ensures even cooking and helps the beans bake perfectly with thick sauce.

Mix the Beans

  • In a large bowl, add canned baked beans. Stir gently so beans stay whole and do not break apart.

Add Sauces and Sugar

  • Add brown sugar, BBQ sauce, mustard and Worcestershire sauce. Mix well until everything blends into a smooth, rich sauce.

Add Onion and Bacon

  • Add cooked onion and chopped bacon to the bowl. Stir well so every bite has smoky and sweet flavor.

Season the Mixture

  • Add black pepper and mix again. Taste the mixture and adjust sweetness or salt if needed before baking.

Transfer to Baking Dish

  • Pour the mixture into a baking dish. Spread evenly using a spoon so it cooks evenly in the oven.

Bake the Beans

  • Place dish in oven. Bake for 45 minutes until sauce thickens, bubbles form and top becomes slightly caramelized and glossy.

Notes

  • Use thick-cut bacon for more flavor.
  • Add jalapeños for a spicy twist.
  • Try maple syrup instead of brown sugar.
  • Use smoked paprika for extra smoky taste.
  • Mix different beans for more texture.
  • Cook longer for thicker sauce.
  • Add ground beef for a hearty version.
