Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large onion sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • Fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

Prepare the Beef Mixture

  • Place ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce and seasonings inside a large bowl. Mix gently until combined evenly.

Shape the Patties

  • Form the beef mixture into oval patties. Make each patty similar in size for even cooking results.

Heat the Skillet

  • Place a large skillet over medium heat. Add olive oil and allow it to heat completely before cooking.

Brown the Patties

  • Add beef patties into the skillet carefully. Cook both sides until nicely browned but not fully cooked inside.

Remove the Patties

  • Transfer browned patties onto a plate. Keep the flavorful juices inside the skillet for making rich gravy later.

Cook the Onions

  • Add butter and sliced onions into the skillet. Cook slowly until onions become soft, golden, and slightly caramelized.

Add the Flour

  • Sprinkle flour over the onions evenly. Stir continuously for one minute to remove the raw flour taste completely.

Pour the Broth

  • Slowly add beef broth while stirring constantly. This keeps the gravy smooth without lumps forming inside the skillet.

Add Extra Flavor

  • Mix ketchup and Dijon mustard into the gravy. Stir well until the sauce becomes rich and fully combined.

Return the Patties

  • Place beef patties back into the skillet carefully. Spoon some gravy over each patty to keep them moist.

Simmer Gently

  • Cover the skillet and simmer for fifteen minutes. The patties will finish cooking while absorbing delicious gravy flavor.

Garnish and Serve

  • Sprinkle fresh parsley over the Salisbury steak. Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles.

Notes

  • Use lean ground beef for less grease.
  • Avoid overmixing the meat mixture.
  • Add mushrooms for extra savory flavor.
  • Use beef stock for richer gravy.
  • Simmer slowly for tender patties.
  • Add a splash of cream for creamy gravy.
  • Fresh garlic gives stronger flavor.
  • Serve with mashed potatoes for comfort food style.
  • Freeze uncooked patties for later meals.
  • Add smoked paprika for deeper taste.
