Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar optional
  • 1/2 cup cold butter or shortening
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk

Instructions
 

Preheat Oven

  • Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet.

Mix Dry Ingredients

  • In a bowl, combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and sugar.

Cut in Butter

  • Add cold butter and mix until crumbly.

Add Buttermilk

  • Pour in buttermilk and mix until dough forms. Do not overmix.

Shape Dough

  • Turn dough onto a floured surface and gently knead 2–3 times.

Cut Biscuits

  • Roll or pat dough and cut into biscuit shapes.

Arrange on Tray

  • Place biscuits close together on baking sheet.

Bake

  • Bake for 12–15 minutes until golden brown.

Serve Warm

  • Serve with butter, jam or gravy.

Notes

  • Use very cold butter for best layers
  • Do not overwork the dough
  • Brush tops with butter before baking
  • Add cheese for cheesy biscuits
  • Use self-rising flour for convenience
