Ingredients

For the Meatballs:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 egg
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper

For the Gravy:

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 onion sliced
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

Mix the beef with seasonings

  • Add ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, and seasonings into a bowl. Mix gently until the meat comes together softly.

Shape the meatballs

  • Roll the mixture into small meatballs. Keep them the same size so they cook evenly and stay juicy.

Heat the skillet

  • Add butter and oil into a skillet. Heat on medium flame until the butter melts completely.

Cook the meatballs

  • Place meatballs in the hot pan. Cook each side until browned. Remove and keep them aside.

Sauté the onions

  • Add sliced onions to the same pan. Cook until soft and golden for the best gravy flavor.

Add flour to the onions

  • Sprinkle flour over onions. Stir well to form a smooth paste that will thicken the gravy.

Pour the beef broth

  • Slowly add beef broth. Stir constantly until the gravy becomes smooth and has no lumps.

Season the gravy

  • Add Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, pepper, and salt. Mix well to create rich brown flavor.

Add meatballs into gravy

  • Place meatballs back in the pan. Let them simmer in gravy so they become soft and absorb flavor.

Simmer until gravy thickens

  • Cook on low heat until the sauce becomes thick and shiny. Turn off heat and serve hot.

Notes

  • Use 85% lean beef for juicier meatballs.
  • Do not overmix the meat or the meatballs may turn tough.
  • Add sliced mushrooms to make mushroom gravy.
  • You can bake the meatballs instead of pan frying them.
  • For a richer flavor, add a splash of heavy cream at the end.
  • Serve the dish over mashed potatoes for a classic comfort meal.
