Ingredients

  • 2 cups short-grain rice
  • 2 1/2 cups water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoons roasted sesame seeds
  • 1/2 cup cooked tuna kimchi, or vegetables for filling
  • 1 sheet nori seaweed, cut into small strips (optional)

Instructions

Rinse the Rice

  • Rinse rice under cold water until water runs clear. This removes excess starch and makes rice less sticky.

Cook the Rice

  • Cook rice in a rice cooker or pot with water. Let it steam until soft and fully cooked.

Season the Rice

  • Transfer cooked rice to a bowl. Add salt and sesame oil. Mix gently to avoid mashing the grains.

Prepare the Filling

  • If using tuna or vegetables, chop finely and season lightly with soy sauce or sesame oil for extra flavor.

Wet Your Hands

  • Fill a small bowl with water. Dip hands in water to prevent rice from sticking while shaping the balls.

Shape the Rice Balls

  • Take a portion of rice and flatten slightly in your palm. Place filling in center. Cover with rice and roll into a ball.

Add Sesame Seeds

  • Roll rice balls gently in roasted sesame seeds. This adds flavor, crunch, and prevents sticking.

Wrap with Nori (Optional)

  • If desired, wrap rice balls with small strips of nori for extra flavor and authentic Korean look.

Repeat Process

  • Repeat shaping process until all rice and filling are used. Keep rice balls slightly warm or at room temperature.

Serve and Enjoy

  • Place rice balls on a plate. Serve immediately as a snack or pack for lunch or picnic.

Notes

  • Use fresh or cooked vegetables as filling.
  • Add kimchi for spicy flavor.
  • Use soy sauce or gochujang for extra taste.
  • Shape into triangles for a traditional Korean style.
  • Make mini rice balls for party snacks.
  • Add cooked egg or cheese as filling.
  • Serve with dipping sauce like soy sauce or sesame sauce.
